For those unfamiliar with island life, it might seem like living on a vacation spot is all about relaxation. But, just like anyone living in non-vacation cities, we too have jobs, feel stress, and manage daily life. Of course, we’re lucky enough to end our day by unwinding on the beach or in lush countryside gardens and seaviews. That said when we really need to escape the daily grind, our beautiful sister island, Formentera, is just a short commute away, waiting to be explored. I'd love to share our family’s favorite plans to ensure a short family stay in Formentera is worth it.
Forget about renting an expensive yacht—grab tickets for the fast ferry instead. The fun part is that you’ll even reach the Formentera “Savina” harbor faster than those cool yachts do! You can wave to them from the upper deck and kids will love watching the waves roll by. Do check the weather predictions, because if it’s a very windy day, seasickness might turn this trip into a whole different experience (I will skip too many details ;)). With the resident discount it will be around 12 euros for a return. Not an official resident? Check out Groupon.es and search for Bealeria, there are year-round coupons with 60% discount!
Upon arriving at the harbor, you’ll see all the bicycle rental shops a stone throw away. Our go-to place for the bikes is called “Moto rent Mitjorn”, but prices don’t vary so much. So you can walk in to every one to see which one has enough kids seats. The first plan is to cycle to our favorite destination Es Pujols, a vibrant coastal town. The bike route is easy and scenic—check my map here for the route. You’ll first cycle alongside the sea, through a safe path in the dunes, before reaching the stunning Salinas area, known for its salt production and pink-hued lakes. These lakes get their unique color from a special algae, making it a magical sight for both kids and adults. While there’s a short section where you’ll cycle on the main road, don’t worry—drivers in Formentera are used to bicycles, and the island limits the number of cars to ensure a safer, more peaceful atmosphere.
Once in Es Pujols, we always stay at our favorite hotel, Sa Volta. It’s family-run, just steps from the beach, and conveniently located in the village center, with a playground right across the street. The hotel has a charming typical Spanish bar and restaurant on the ground floor that serves a delicious buffet and à la carte breakfast, along with snacks and meals throughout the day. But the real highlight? The rooftop terrace. With a large pool, jacuzzi, and panoramic views of Formentera, it's hard to believe this is a three-star hotel. The rooms are spacious, clean, and most have bathtubs and private balconies—perfect for families. Plus, it’s incredibly affordable and run by a lovely family, making it a great choice.
What else does Es Pujols have to offer?
Aside from the relaxed island vibe, Es Pujols has a unique mix of fun and flavor. One of my favorite spots is a new beach shack that plays throwback hits from the ‘70s to the ‘90s. The quirky staff gives you a glitter stamp on your face when you order a drink! A smart move because kids just keep wanting more of that colourful face-paint. If you’re in the mood for something Asiatic for dinner, head to China Town Lounge & Sushi, the best Japanese/Chinese fusion spot in the Pitiüses. We can’t be on Formentera without dinner in this place... The food is fresh and budget-friendly, with crispy duck pancakes that are simply to die for!
A stroll along the beach leads to Chiringuito Nuu, a laid-back beach bar where you can sip on cocktails while gazing at the soft pink sand as the tide rolls in. It’s a perfect way to relax after exploring. And right next to it is the stretched, more quiet and masmerizing part of the platja Es Pujol.
On the way back, I recommend changing the route to cycle past the capital, Sant Francesc, and take time to browse Formentera’s history. Step back in time with a visit to the parish church of Sant Francesc in Formentera, on a romantic square. Built in 1738 as a fortress to protect against pirate raids, it still stands strong with iron-plated doors. Nearby, the Sa Tanca Vella chapel, dating all the way back to the 14th century, was once the island's only place of worship until the community outgrew it. Though small, it's a historical gem that speaks to Formentera's early days. Furthermore Sant Francesc has lovely boutiques and if you’re craving Italian cuisine, El Gioviale is a fantastic spot for an authentic pasta that they serve in meal pans, so you can share a few with the whole family. But honestly, you can walk blindly into almost any restaurant here and be greeted with delicious food. Hotel & Spa Es Mares is one of Fansesc’s popular year round hang-outs. You’ll see many local pensionados enjoying their wine and cocktails during lunch and afternoons. Dressed in colourful dresses, super trendy and fit - in Formentera age has no name.
Sant Francesc is a perfect way to wind down, soaking in the special Formentera vibe before returning to Ibiza. Afterward, it’s just a short 10-minute ride back to the harbor—to continue to enjoy that bit of exercise in nature. Especially since cycling in Ibiza tends to be more demanding. With all its enchanting spots, Formentera is the ideal getaway to recharge and escape the bustle of everyday life in Ibiza. See you there next time!
